Situated in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India.
Located at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,279 ft) in the Garhwal Himalayas.
The temple lies on the banks of the Alaknanda River, between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, with the Neelkanth Peak in the backdrop.
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Badrinarayan.
Considered one of the Char Dham Yatra shrines and also one of the Chota Char Dham in Uttarakhand.
It is one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples) revered in Vaishnavism.
Believed to be the place where Lord Vishnu meditated, while Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to provide him shade.
The temple’s origins are ancient, believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
The current structure was built by the Garhwal kings and later renovated by various rulers.
Constructed in traditional North Indian style (Nagada style) with a colorful façade and stone walls.
The sanctum houses a 1-meter tall black stone idol of Lord Vishnu (Badrinarayan) in a meditative pose.
The temple is situated beside the Alaknanda River, one of the main tributaries of the holy Ganga.
Pilgrims believe that a dip in the river near the temple cleanses sins before darshan.
Tapt Kund – A natural hot water spring near the temple where devotees take a purifying bath before entering the shrine.
The water is considered medicinal and sacred.
Unlike Kedarnath and Yamunotri, Badrinath is accessible directly by road.
Well-connected by road to Rishikesh (295 km), Haridwar (320 km), and Dehradun (335 km).
Nearest railway station: Rishikesh (about 295 km).
Nearest airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (about 311 km).
The temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May).
Closes on Vijaya Dashami/Diwali (October/November).
During winter, the idol is moved to Joshimath (Narsingh Temple) for worship.
May to June and September to October are the best months.
Monsoon (July–August) is avoided due to heavy rains and landslides.
Winters (November–April) are snow-covered and inaccessible.
Mana Village – Last village on the Indo-Tibetan border, just 3 km from Badrinath.
Vyas Gufa & Ganesh Gufa – Ancient caves where Maharishi Vyas composed the Mahabharata.
Bheem Pul – A natural stone bridge over the Saraswati River, believed to be placed by Bheema.
Charan Paduka – A rock with footprints believed to be of Lord Vishnu.
Neelkanth Peak – Majestic mountain visible from the temple.
Daily rituals: Abhishek, Alankara, Aarti, and Vishnu Sahasranama chanting.
Mata Murti Ka Mela – Celebrated in September, honoring the mother of Lord Badrinath.
Badri-Kedar Festival – Held every June, celebrated jointly with Kedarnath.
Closing ceremony during Diwali is a major event, attended by thousands of devotees.
